Music

Wright Middle School STEAM and Gifted Magnets is a sequential arts middle school. Students are able to stay with an instrumental music elective all three years if they wish. Wright Arts is a sequential arts department that includes instrumental music, stage crew, theater and choir. In the music department we offer beginning strings, winds, technical stage crew, modern band/stage crew, advanced band and orchestra. We also offer a drum line group that meets as a club at lunch. Students often form their own ensembles and are able to practice every lunch and nutrition that the music room is open. We have the drum set, electric guitars and basses, sound system and keyboards available. We also have air conditioned practice rooms off of the main room for students to rehearse in. In addition to the drum line students in advanced band can participate in the jazz band.

Your child will be taught by two highly trained musicians. Ms. Maureas is a 24 year veteran K-12 music teacher. She is a professional flutist with a BA from UCLA and a MA from NYU in jazz performance. She is also a LAUSD Teacher of the Year 2022 and a Grammy Educator Quarter Finalist 2016/17. Mr. Mike Hyziak is our part time music instructor who spends the rest of his professional time preparing music for A list musicians through out the world. He is also a prolific composer, arranger and transcriber. He currently works with Randy Brecker, The Dizzy Gillespie All Stars and many more. Mr. Mike has two BAs from University of NY at Buffalo and a Master’s Degree from NYU in jazz composition. Ms. Maureas and Mr. Mike has proudly been serving the WMS community for twelve years.

Since Wright is a project based learning community our music department promotes student growth in PBL by collaborating with the theater program on an annual junior musical.

Students do not need to have an instrument or previous musical knowledge! All instruments are provided by and maintained by Wright. All instrument loans are free of charge! We are also dedicated to affirming all student cultural backgrounds as the basis of our learning environment. In addition to learning music theory students are affirmed by learning about diverse musical styles and musicians. In addition students intellectual abilities in terms of creative, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills that are required for the 21st Century workplace are cultivated.
