Academic/Arts Festivals and Competitions

 

These challenging and motivational events are balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. They require knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications. In addition, during the day there are open house activities that consist of science and mathematics demonstrations, activities and career counseling sessions conducted by professors and scientists at the host institution.

 

Participants must be able to commit to after school classes, in addition to the main science Olympiad event in February, which is held at Occidental college.

Students in instrumental and vocal music, dance and visual art compete against area schools. Students perform for a three-person panel. The panel is made of local business owners and artists. Award amounts range from $1000 to $350. All participants receive at least a $75. The competition is held at the Arts Collective in Westchester. Previous Seahawks have won between $500-$1,000.

 

Students across Los Angeles County in the secondary level perform for area music teachers and compete for music lesson scholarships. Students play a performance solo and are judged on their piece. Wright has had numerous students compete and be awarded music scholarships from this organization.

The LAUSD West Area district music festival is sponsoring a music festival at Venice High School. Students from 30 west-side elementary, middle and high schools will take the stage. Wright Middle School will take their Advanced Band and Jazz Band this year.

 

The History Bee is an exciting social studies competition for students who love learning, competing, and having fun! The National History Bee is an academic competition for elementary and middle school students that tests knowledge of a wide range of historical topics. Students will compete against other pupils throughout the nation at testing their historical knowledge of world and United States history facts. All students can take the optional intramural History Bee. The top ten students from that Intramural Bee will be invited to participate in the Online Qualifying Exam. Students with a passing score on the Online Qualifying Exam will be invited to the regional round of the History Bee to represent Wright Engineering Design Magnet School.

 

Participating students progress from the school level to the national level and finally to the Nationals Finals where one student is crowned the National History Bee Champion! Last year was our first year in the History Bee competition and it was a success! It was a great experience for our students! This year, we're hoping to send ten students to the regionals and hopefully, to the Nationals!

 

Our students compete with middle schools throughout LAUSD in an annual Spelling Bee, Solar Sprint Competition and Battle of the Books.

 

Wright students participate in a variety of school-wide and district-wide contests such as the Academic English Mastery Program (AEMP) Annual Essay Contest as well as the Association of Mexican American Educators (AMAE) Annual Art Contest. In 2015-16, Wright MS took 1st place in both contests.

 

The Wright Robotics team is currently in its second year, with this year’s competitions taking place in May. Using the VexIQ competition platform, student team members compete in the building/designing of robots, driving/controlling and programming of robots to operate independently. Last year, Wright MS had two teams who competed against over 40 other LAUSD MSAP schools, and finished in the Top Five.
